Hackers target senior executives at German company procuring PPE

On March 30, as the novel coronavirus swept through Germany, the country’s government tasked nine multinational companies, including pharmaceutical giant Bayer and automaker Volkswagen, with procuring personal protective equipment to make up for a lack of gear. The same day, unidentified hackers began an intensive phishing campaign to infiltrate at least one of those nine firms, according to research published Monday by IBM. The findings show how multiple aspects of societies’ response to the coronavirus — from testing facilities to vaccine research to PPE procurement — have been targeted by hackers of various stripes. The phishing attempts against the unnamed German company, which are ongoing, have extended to more than 100 senior management and procurement executives at the company and its suppliers in multiple sectors, according to IBM. It is unclear if the hacking has been successful, or who is responsible (IBM researchers weren’t sure). What is clear is that […]

‘Valak’ gives crooks flexibility in multi-stage malware attacks

Hackers often plant their malicious software on computers in stages. One piece of code can be a foothold onto a network, another delivers the malware, and yet another executes it to steal or manipulate data. But looks can be deceiving. The same code used as a staging tool in one attack might be the tip of the spear in another. For targeted organizations, spotting the difference can mean saving your data. That’s the case with a malicious program that has been used in hacking attempts against multiple economic sectors in the U.S. and Germany in the last six months, according to research published Thursday by security company Cybereason. About 150 organizations in the financial, retail, manufacturing, and health care sectors have been targeted by the Valak malware since it emerged late last year, the researchers said. More than just a “loader” that delivers malicious code, Valak can also be used […]

German intelligence agencies warn of Russian hacking threats to critical infrastructure

A Kremlin-linked hacking group has continued its long-running efforts to target German companies in the energy, water and power sectors, according to a confidential German government advisory obtained by CyberScoop. Investigators earlier this year uncovered evidence of the hackers’ “longstanding compromises” at unnamed German companies, according to the memo that German intelligence and security agencies sent last week to operators of critical infrastructure. The hacking group — dubbed Berserk Bear and suspected by some industry analysts of operating on behalf of Russia’s FSB intelligence agency — has been using the supply chain to access the German companies’ IT systems, said the alert from the BSI, BND, and BfV federal agencies. “The attackers’ goal is to use publicly available but also specially written malware to permanently anchor themselves in the IT network…steal information or even gain access to productive systems [OT networks],” the advisory said. There was no evidence of a disruptive attack […]

European health care giant Fresenius Group grappling with computer virus

Fresenius Group, a big European health care conglomerate, said Wednesday that a computer virus had infected at least one of its businesses’ IT systems. It’s another sign that malicious hackers see medical organizations as fair game despite a global health crisis. The Germany-based corporation said the security incident had hampered some production in its pharmaceutical business, Fresenius Kabi, which makes everything from nutritional products and infusion therapies to pain relievers that are in high demand during the coronavirus pandemic. Fresenius Group spokesperson Steffen Rinas declined to specify which production units were affected by the malware. He did say that Fresenius’s hospitals — said to be the largest private network in Europe — were not affected by the incident. The company did not specify the nature of the virus. “As a precautionary measure in accordance with the security protocol drawn up for such cases, steps have been taken to prevent further spread,” Rinas said in an email. “Nevertheless, our production […]
