In a stunning exchange Monday during a press conference between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the former KGB agent offered to host American law enforcement officials who are currently investigating foreign meddling in U.S. elections. The proposal comes after the Department of Justice last week indicted 12 active Russian military intelligence officers for allegedly hacking the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) before selectively leaking stolen material through a collage of websites during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump appeared to approve of the idea, calling it “an incredible offer” for members of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team to travel to Russia as part of their broad investigation into Russian interference in the elections. “[Putin] offered to have the people working on this case come and work with their investigators with respect to the 12 people,” Trump said. Putin also said he would expect “reciprocity,” with Russian investigators allowed to […]

The US Treasury sanctioned five companies accusing them of helping the Russian government hack. But the founder of one of those companies vehemently denied the accusations. Continue reading Founder of Cybersecurity Company Says His Firm Was Sanctioned Because He was Born in Russia
The U.S. sanctioned five Russian entities and three Russian individuals on Monday under the authority of an Obama-era executive order on sanctioning those “engaging in significant malicious cyber-enabled activities.” Officials are targeting companies and individuals that they say worked with Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), the country’s chief intelligence agency, for offensive hacking capabilities. Some of the companies have offices in the U.S. The chief target of the sanctions is Digital Security, a Russia-based cybersecurity company that Treasury says “worked on a project that would increase Russia’s offensive cyber capabilities for the Russian Intelligence Services, to include the FSB.” Two other cybersecurity companies, ERPScan and Embedi, were sanctioned, as well as subsidiaries of Digital Security. Both of those companies have addresses in or around California’s Silicon Valley. None of the companies answered requests for comment. “The United States is engaged in an ongoing effort to counter malicious actors working at the behest of the Russian […]

Remember when Yahoo seemed to have been beset by hack after hack after hack? In September 2016, Yahoo revealed that the personal data of over 500 million users had been stolen by hackers in 2014. As if that wasn’t bad enough, three months later t… Continue reading Jail for the man who helped Russia hack Yahoo’s email accounts
A 23-year-old man who pleaded guilty for his role in helping Russian spies hack into email accounts was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday. Karim Baratov, a Kazakhstan-born Canadian citizen, was arrested in Toronto last year before being extradited to the United States. Prosecutors say he was part of a group working with two intelligence agents from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). Baratov pleaded guilty in November for playing a role in the massive 2014 Yahoo data breach. That breach saw information tied to 500 million accounts stolen from the company. He was also charged with helping Russian spies hack into 11,000 email accounts. Sentencing came later than initially planned after Judge Vince Chhabria told prosecutors last month that their request of an eight-year sentence seemed “way out of whack compared to most hackers.” Baratov’s lawyers were asking for a 45-month sentence. After further filings from the government […]

Sentencing was delayed in the case against Karim Baratov, the hacker who broke into 11,000 email accounts including targeting specific individuals’ email accounts for the Russian intelligence agency FSB. Baratov, a 23-year-old born in Kazakhstan, pleaded guilty last year to helping hack into Yahoo and Gmail accounts. Prosecutors described Baratov’s actions as directions from Russian intelligence officers Dmitry Dokuchaev and Igor Sushchin to target specific accounts of interest to the FSB. Dokuchaev paid Baratov to hack into at least 80 email accounts, including that of journalists, lawyers and senior government officials in Russia and its border countries, as well as “prominent leaders in the commercial industries” like banking and transportation, according to court documents. U.S. government officials and tech company employees were also targeted. Baratov, who was arrested in March 2017 at his adopted home in Canada, argues that he never knew the identities of the people he was working for. Judge Vince Chhabria began the hearing by saying […]
