James Webb Telescope turns its infrared eyes on Jupiter

Last week the James Webb Space Telescope made history with its first images, showing a galaxy cluster billions of light-years away, but now it’s turned its sights on something much closer to home. NASA has released infrared images Webb snapped of Jupit… Continue reading James Webb Telescope turns its infrared eyes on Jupiter

NASA concept proposes swarm of swimming robots to explore alien oceans

Subsurface oceans on gas giant moons are some of the most promising places to look for life beyond Earth. NASA has now awarded funding for a project to develop a swarm of small swimming robots that would explore these alien oceans for signs of extrater… Continue reading NASA concept proposes swarm of swimming robots to explore alien oceans

Seafloor volcanoes may be supporting life on icy Europa

Jupiter’s Icy moon Europa may have enough internal heat to trigger volcanic activity on the floor of its global ocean, according to the results of a new study. Despite being encased in a shell of water ice, Europa is considered to be one of the most pr… Continue reading Seafloor volcanoes may be supporting life on icy Europa

Europa Decision Delivers Crushing Blow to NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS)

These days, NASA deciding to launch one of their future missions on a commercial rocket is hardly a surprise. After all, the agency is now willing to fly their astronauts on boosters and spacecraft built and operated by SpaceX. Increased …read more

Europa’s plumes may not originate from subsurface ocean

Jupiter’s moon Europa is a fascinating world, with a global subsurface ocean encased in an icy shell and plumes of water vapor that vent into space. A new study has simulated how these plumes might originate, revealing a surprisingly dynamic ice ball.C… Continue reading Europa’s plumes may not originate from subsurface ocean

Radiation bombardment from Jupiter makes Europa glow in the dark

Giving a new meaning to the word “moonshine,” NASA scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, have concluded that Jupiter’s moon Europa glows in the dark due to being constantly bombarded with high-energy radiation.Conti… Continue reading Radiation bombardment from Jupiter makes Europa glow in the dark

Saturn’s moon may be “like a candy store for microbes”

A new report published by NASA today says that the Cassini space probe has found evidence that hydrogen gas exists on the Saturnian moon Enceladus. The finding adds to the idea that the moon might harbor life in its subsurface ocean, as microbes could … Continue reading Saturn’s moon may be “like a candy store for microbes”

NASA confirms Europa Clipper mission to study Jupiter's icy moon

Artist's impression of the Europa Clipper

NASA has given the official go-ahead for the Europa Clipper deep-space mission to make a detailed survey of one of Jupiter’s largest moons. Scheduled to launch in about 2025, the unmanned mission can now proceed to its final design phase ahead of the building and testing of the spacecraft and its instruments.

Europa's ocean may be more Earthlike than previously thought

Color composite view combines violet, green, and infrared images of Europa in natural color (left) and ...

A new study by researchers at Caltech and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, indicates that the subterranean world ocean on Jupiter’s moon Europa may be more Earthlike than scientists believed. Visible-light spectrographic analysis show that yellow stains on Europa’s icy crust are common table salt, suggesting that the Europan ocean may be similar to its terrestrial counterparts.
