Pentagon bristles at anti-American rhetoric in foreign coronavirus reports

U.S. military officials are criticizing foreign governments for spreading disinformation related to the coronavirus pandemic. In the latest example of the Pentagon trying to mitigate foreign propaganda, U.S. officials admonished the governments of Russia, China and Iran for leveraging the international COVID-19 outbreak to summon anti-American sentiment. U.S. officials, in a statement Monday on a government website, accused state-funded media agencies, like Russia’s Sputnik News, of creating mistrust in credible information in order to create confusion. “These are the messages that are endangering global health because they’re undermining the efforts of governments, of health agencies and of organizations that are in charge of disseminating accurate information about the virus to the public,” said Laura Cooper, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia in a piece published by DOD News, a U.S. government-funded media agency. It’s the latest example of U.S. officials responding to foreign propaganda since the State Department began tracking […]

Sanders informed that Russia is trying to help his campaign

U.S. officials have informed Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., that Russia is trying to boost his presidential campaign as part of a broader effort to interfere in the 2020 presidential elections and the crowded Democratic field. It was not clear what the assistance, first reported by The Washington Post, entailed. Sanders confirmed the news Friday, telling reporters in Nevada he had learned about Russian interference in his campaign approximately one month ago. “I don’t care, frankly, who Putin wants to be president. My message to Putin is clear: stay out of American elections, and as president I will make sure that you do,” Sanders said in a statement emailed to CyberScoop. “Unlike Donald Trump, I do not consider Vladimir Putin a good friend. He is an autocratic thug who is attempting to destroy democracy and crush dissent in Russia. Let’s be clear, the Russians want to undermine American democracy by dividing us up […]

Russia is planning to interfere in 2020 presidential election: report

Russia is working to interfere in the 2020 presidential election in an effort to get President Donald Trump re-elected, according to a briefing delivered to the House Intelligence Committee last week. According to a report in the The New York Times, the briefing detailed evidence that Moscow is trying to duplicate its efforts during the 2016 presidential elections, where Russia developed a “clear preference” for Trump and sought to “denigrate” the candidacy of the potential Democratic nominee. The briefing, delivered by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s election security lead Shelby Pierson, reportedly upset Trump because he suspected Democratic committee members would use the information against him, according to the Times and The Washington Post. Trump mistakenly thought that the information was supplied exclusively to Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., despite the fact that multiple committee members from both parties were briefed. Trump was so infuriated by the briefing […]

Report: Russian hackers waged broad phishing campaign against company tied to Trump impeachment

Hackers linked to the Russian government have been targeting Burisma, a Ukrainian company tied to the impeachment trial against President Donald Trump, with a wide-ranging phishing campaign, according to California-based anti-phishing firm Area 1 Security. The campaign, which started in November, came as Congress was holding hearings tied to efforts by Trump to have Ukrainian President Voldymr Zelenskiy investigate Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, who served on the board of Burisma. The hackers, which Area 1 says work on behalf of Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate, created fake websites designed to look like legitimate Burisma subsidiary websites and login pages. They then sent Burisma employees emails that looked to be authentic internal company emails with links to illegitimate login pages designed to steal login credentials. The subsidiaries that were mimicked include KUB-Gas LLC, Esko-Pivnich, and CUB Energy Inc., according to the Area 1 report. Although it wasn’t […]

Commerce Department proposes rules for implementing Trump’s supply-chain security order

The Department of Commerce on Tuesday outlined how it might implement a White House order that gives the department broad leeway to ban foreign parts in U.S. IT and communications supply chains because of security concerns. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross will “adopt a case-by-case” approach to determining what components will be banned, drawing on assessments from the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the department said in a statement. Under the proposal, before making a final decision to exclude a foreign company from U.S. digital supply chains, the Commerce Secretary would notify the company, giving it the opportunity to address security concerns and avoid a ban. The secretary would send an unclassified ruling to the parties explaining the decision and make that public when appropriate. The proposal is a key step toward making a more stringent national policy governing U.S. supply chains a […]
