Jeff Sessions made investors want to throw money at dark net intelligence firms

When U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions stepped in front of cameras and told the world about the international law enforcement operation that resulted in the bust of at least two multimillion-dollar dark net markets, investors’ ears perked up. OWL Cybersecurity is a two-year old Denver-based dark net intelligence firm currently closing a funding round. In the one week since Sessions and other federal law enforcement officials announced the AlphaBay dark net bust, OWL vice president Andrew Lewman says he has received a mountain of phone calls from potential investors. “Regardless of your politics, when Jeff Sessions stands up and says ‘the dark net is a concern, that gets a lot of attention,” Lewman said. “In the past two weeks, we’ve had all these people we’ve talked to in the past saying they didn’t understand it, didn’t know what it was come at us and say, ‘About that investment, are you still taking offers?’” […]

$365,000 dark net phishing scam leads to guilty plea from U.S. hacker

A Connecticut man pleaded guilty to charges of phishing against criminal dark web markets in a scheme that eventually obtained over $365,000 and more than 10,000 stolen user credentials. Michael Richo, 35 of Connecticut, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Hartford federal court to hacking and money laundering offenses. Richo’s scheme is familiar to any dark net denizen: In forums on the dark net, he posted fake links to dark net markets where illicit goods and services are on sale. He built fake login pages to fool victims and steal their credentials. Richo then monitored the compromised accounts and withdrew any bitcoin deposited into them before it could be spent. It ended up being deposited in his own bitcoin wallet. “Richo then sold the stolen bitcoins to others in exchange for U.S. currency, which was deposited into bank accounts that RICHO controlled or was provided to him through Green Dot Cards, Western Union transfers, and MoneyGram […]

Tor’s ex-director: ‘The criminal use of Tor has become overwhelming’

Nearly two years to the day since Andrew Lewman quit his job as executive director of Tor, the anonymity software meant to shield users from government intervention, he found himself rushing between meetings with European law enforcement. Boosted by endorsements from internet activists like Julian Assange and Edward Snowden, Lewman had been at the helm of Tor as it became synonymous with internet user privacy. Now, as the newly minted vice president of dark web intel firm OWL Cybersecurity, his meetings with governments have gone from educating officials on how people use Tor to helping law enforcement investigate criminal activity occurring on Tor. As Lewman spoke to CyberScoop last month in between two of those meetings, it became clear that his perspective on the software has shifted. “What’s changed most about Tor is the drug markets have taken over,” Lewman said. “We had all these hopeful things in the beginning but ever since Silk Road has proven you […]

Monero cryptocurrency doubled in price in March and is being used more widely on dark net markets

Monero, a cryptocurrency designed for anonymity and security, doubled in price over the last month to around $23 while other digital currencies, including bitcoin, saw a mixed month. One reason for Monero’s recent success: Cybercriminals intrigued by the currency’s promises of greater anonymity are using it more often on black markets. Several prominent vendors dealing in malware and other illicit products told CyberScoop they saw a slow but noticeable rise in Monero’s use over the last month. Amid a wave of interest in privacy-focused cryptocurrency technology, Monero was created by a psuedononymous hacker in 2014 as scams swallowed early attempts to develop anonymous coins. By the time it appeared on the scene, bitcoin was already widely used on dark net markets and was being closely watched by law enforcement. The creator faded away quickly while Monero itself has stuck around and, in 2016,  grew 2,760 percent in price. The early 2017 growth builds on that. Here’s […]
