Munich Security Conference attendees targeted with Iran-linked spearphishing, Microsoft says

Iranian government-linked hackers have been sending spearphishing emails to large swaths of high-profile potential attendees of upcoming the Munich Security Conference as well as the Think 20 Summit in Saudi Arabia, according to Microsoft research. The Iranian attackers, known as Phosphorous, have disguised themselves as conference organizers and have sent fake invitations containing PDF documents with malicious links to over 100 possible invitees of the conferences, both of which are prominent summits dedicated to international security and policies of the world’s largest economies, respectively. In some cases the attackers have been successful in guiding some victims to those links, which lead victims to credential-harvesting pages, Tom Burt, corporate vice president of Microsoft Security and Trust announced in blog published Wednesday morning. “We believe Phosphorus is engaging in these attacks for intelligence collection purposes,” Burt wrote in the blog. “The attacks were successful in compromising several victims, including former ambassadors and other senior policy experts who help shape […]

Iran-linked hackers steal sensitive data from U.S. Navy member, researchers say

Allison Wikoff has spent years tracking suspected Iranian hackers, sifting through data they’ve left behind and analyzing their techniques. But in May, when her colleague stumbled upon a server with 40 gigabytes of the hackers’ training videos and online personas, Wikoff knew she had struck gold. “[When] we started combing through all the data and video files we couldn’t believe what we were seeing,” said  Wikoff, a cyber threat analyst on IBM’s X-Force security team. “This discovery brought a whole new meaning to observing ‘hands-on keyboard activity.’” The nearly five hours of videos found on the server, which IBM reported publicly on Thursday, include evidence of a suspected Iranian hacker stealing data from the personal email and social media accounts of an enlisted member of the U.S. Navy and a Greek naval officer. The attacker managed to exfiltrate files on the military unit of the U.S. Navy member and their […]

Google: Biden and Trump campaigns targeted by separate spearphishing campaigns

Hackers linked with China and Iran have been sending malicious spearphishing emails to staff on Joe Biden and President Donald Trump’s campaigns respectively, according to a researcher with Google’s Threat Analysis Group. Chinese government-linked hackers have been targeting Biden’s staffers, whereas Iranian government-linked hackers have been targeting Trump’s campaign, according to Shane Huntley, the Director of Google’s Threat Analysis Group. There is no evidence that the hacking attempts have resulted in compromises, Huntley said. This is just the latest warning from security researchers and the U.S. intelligence community that foreign government-backed hackers are interested in targeting various U.S. presidential campaigns during the 2020 election cycle, in what is turning out to be a tumultuous year for American citizens amid economic turmoil, the coronavirus pandemic, and mass protests about racism. “We have known from the beginning of our campaign that we would be subject to such attacks and we are prepared for […]
