Russian government continues crackdown on cybercriminals

Russian authorities seized the websites of several Russian cybercrime forums Monday, the latest in a string of high-profile actions the government there has taken against cybercriminals. Visitors to the websites for Sky Fraud, a forum for stolen credit card data, were greeted with a message posted by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs announcing that the page was blocked. Other “carding” and cybercrime forums were also seized, including Ferum and Trump’s Dumps, as well as U-A-S Shop, which offered illicit remote access to various organizations through the remote desktop protocol (RDP) tool. “The SKYFRAUD resource was closed forever during a special law enforcement operation,” the message reads in Russian translated to English. “Management ‘K’ of the BSTM of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia warns: theft of funds from bank cards is illegal!” Within the source code of the seized website, the Russian government left a message: “Which of […]

Joker’s Stash claims 3 million cards stolen from Dickey’s Barbecue

Joker’s Stash, one of the most notorious web forums for stolen credit card data, has claimed a new scalp. Sellers on the site this week claimed to be offering 3 million payment card numbers used at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, a U.S. fast-food chain, researchers at intelligence firm Gemini Advisory said Thursday. More than 100 of the barbecue joint’s locations were affected by the breach, and the data is being sold for a median price of $17 per card, according to the research. The data from Dickey’s Barbecue Pit customers appears to have been compromised between July 2019 and August 2020, according to Gemini Advisory. Numerous restaurant and hospitality chains have been hit by scammers in recent years because of the personal financial data they collect. “Given the widespread nature of the breach, the exposure may be linked to a breach of the single central processor, which was leveraged by over a quarter of all […]

Another guilty plea in $568 million Infraud crime ring

A Moldovan man on Friday became the second person in as many months to plead guilty to being part of Infraud, a $568 million cybercriminal enterprise that stole payment cards and personal data from around the world, the U.S. Department of Justice said. 30-year-old Valerian Chiochiu, who allegedly trained Infraud members on writing and deploying malware, appeared before a judge in federal court in Nevada, U.S. officials said. Chiochiu’s guilty plea follows that of Sergey Medvedev, a 33-year-old Russian, who is accused of being the group’s co-founder. The pleas are part of the ongoing U.S. effort to prosecute Infraud, which Department of Justice officials say victimized people in all 50 states. At its height, Infraud aspired to be the internet’s top spot for “carding,” or buying things with stolen credit card data. It amassed more than 10,000 members, and claimed to only allow vetted vendors of stolen data to advertise […]

Russian national pleads guilty to being part of $568 million fraud ring

A 33-year-old Russian man has pleaded guilty to being part of a cybercriminal enterprise that caused more than $568 million in losses through identity theft and stolen payment cards, the U.S. Justice Department announced Friday. Sergey Medvedev is accused of being a leader of the Infraud Organization, an online forum that trafficked in stolen financial data, malware “and other contraband,” the department said in a press release. Medvedev, also known as “Stells,” “segmed” and “serjbear,” pleaded guilty to RICO conspiracy in federal court in Nevada, U.S. officials said. Infraud was founded a decade ago by a Ukrainian national who wanted to make it the internet’s top spot for “carding,” or buying things with stolen credit card data, according to the indictment. Infraud members routed interested buyers to the automated sites of members, which offered malware and stolen financial and personal data, according to prosecutors. The organization’s slogan was, “In Fraud We Trust,” prosecutors […]
