Bulgaria hacking suspect worked on government cybersecurity before tax agency breach

Bulgarian authorities have arrested a 20-year-old government contractor in connection with a hack on the country’s national tax agency that involved information about roughly 5 million adults, prosecutors said Wednesday. Prosecutors described the suspect only as “KB,” though Bulgarian media quickly identified him only as Christian Boykov, or Kristian Boykov, a computer specialist from the city of Plovdiv. The Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office described the hacking suspect as a “cyber security expert” who is “involved in testing and auditing information systems,” according to a translation of their announcement. Boykov has been conducting cybersecurity training for the GDOC, a Bulgarian government agency, his lawyers told MediaPool.ng. While Bulgaria investigates financial breach, hackers tease more data

Hackers stole financial information about millions of Bulgarians as part of a security incident at the country’s tax agency in what appears to be the largest breach of personal information to ever affect the Eastern European nation. The National Revenue Agency in a statement Monday said it was working with other government organizations to investigate whether a vulnerability in its computer systems made it possible for hackers to steal financial files. Hackers had previously contacted local media offering access to databases containing millions of rows of personal information about Bulgarian citizens including names, addresses, earning numbers and other financial data. Various media reports suggested the leaked information included data on 5 million of Bulgaria’s roughly 7 million citizens. While the cause and extent of the breach still are investigation, Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov told journalists that hackers behind the attack contacted Bulgarian media outlets from an email address on Yandex.ru, […]

International police dismantle crime ring that allegedly used GozNym malware to try to steal $100 million

Law enforcement officials from the U.S. and some European allies say they have broken up a criminal network that used banking malware to try to steal an estimated $100 million from over 41,000 victims in multiple countries. An indictment made public Thursday alleges that 10 members of a criminal organization used the GozNym malware, a banking trojan that infects internet browsers and was compiled from two other known pieces of malware, to steal victims’ login credentials, steal their money and then launder those funds through U.S. and foreign bank accounts. The primary victims were U.S. businesses and their supporting financial institutions, including several victims in the Western District of Pennsylvania, U.S. officials said. Other organizations hit were a Pennsylvania asphalt and paving business, a Washington law firm, a casino in Gulport, Mississippi, and a California furniture business, according to the indictment. Cybersecurity researchers tracking GozNym in recent years have reported its targeting of credit […]
