Russian-linked group tied to Winter Olympics attack is now targeting biochemical researchers

A wave of sophisticated spear phishing emails captured by Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab suggests that the same Russian-linked hacking group responsible for a historic cyberattack on the 2018 Winter Olympics is now targeting biochemical research and domestic financial organizations. Dubbed the “Sandworm Group” by security analysts, the attackers gained notoriety earlier this year when a destructive hacking tool aimed at the IT network attached to the Winter Olympics caught the attention of multiple intelligence agencies. That tool, known as “Olympic Destroyer,” allowed for malware to spread within multiple confined IT environments, quickly deleting boot records and other forensic artifacts while also simultaneously siphoning off sensitive user credentials. CyberScoop previously reported that Sandworm had hacked into the 2018 Olympic games primary IT provider, Atos, months before the event began. One related phishing email that uses a booby trapped Microsoft Word document explicitly mentions a biochemical threat research conference held in Switzerland, which is organized by Spiez Laboratory. Atos, IT provider for Winter Olympics, hacked months before Opening Ceremony cyberattack

Hackers armed with destructive malware appear to have compromised the main IT service provider for the Winter Olympic Games months before last week’s highly publicized cyberattack. Publicly available evidence analyzed by experts and reviewed by CyberScoop suggests that whoever deployed the Olympic Destroyer malware on Feb. 9 likely previously penetrated a series of computer systems in December belonging to Atos, a multinational information technology service provider that is hosting the cloud infrastructure for the Pyeongchang games. The evidence was recently posted to the VirusTotal repository, but information associated with the malware samples carries indications that the hackers were inside Atos systems since at least December. Some of the earliest samples were uploaded by unnamed VirusTotal users geographically located in France, where Atos is headquartered, and Romania, where some members of Atos’ security team work. On Feb. 9, the official Winter Olympics website went down for several hours, causing a disruption to ticket sales and downloads during the […]

Atos makes $5 billion bid for Gemalto

Atos, a French technology consulting firm, to buy the Dutch tech firm Gemalto for €4.3 billion ($5.06 billion) on Monday. The acquisition offer was made two weeks ago at a premium of 42 percent on Gemalto’s stock price. Combining Atos and Gemalto will create a cyber and national security business with total annual revenue of €1.5 billion, Breton said in a statement on Monday. That line of business in particular would be a major player in both the European and American markets. Gemalto’s cybersecurity business is a driving force behind the offer, according to Thierry Breton, Chairman and CEO of Atos. Gemalto is one of the world’s biggest microchip manufacturers, but profits have been lower than expected for the last year. The company is the world’s largest manufacturer of SIM cards and credit card chips. Gemalto’s businesses in data encryption, identity and access management and crypto management are meant to complement Atos’s artificial intelligence, big data, high performance computers and cloud […]
