Michigan man accused in 2014 hack of medical center, sale of data on 65,000 people

Federal agents have arrested a 29-year-old Michigan man for allegedly hacking into a medical center in 2014, stealing data on more than 65,000 people and then selling it on the dark web, the Department of Justice announced Thursday. A 43-count indictment charges Justin Sean Johnson with wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy for the hack of a database at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pennsylvania’s largest health care system. Johnson’s sale of medical center employees’ Social Security numbers and addresses led other alleged criminals to claim hundreds of thousands of dollars in fake IRS tax refunds, prosecutors said. “The health care sector has become an attractive target of cyber criminals looking to update personal information for use in fraud,” Timothy Burke, special agent in charge for the U.S. Secret Service in Pittsburgh, said in a statement. Federal officials have arrested another accused FIN7 hacker

A Ukrainian national was arrested last week in Seattle for his alleged involvement in hacking operations run by FIN7, a syndicate known for stealing approximately $1 billion from its victims in the United States. According to court documents obtained by CyberScoop, Denys Iarmak has been charged with conspiracy to commit computer hacking, accessing a protected computer to commit fraud, intentional damage to a protected computer, access device fraud, conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. The arrest is a significant move against financially motivated FIN7, which has targeted the hospitality and gaming industries in the last several years.  FIN7 has gone after restaurants including Chipotle, Red Robin, Taco John, as well as a credit union and a casino. Preaching blockchain in North Korea gets an American in trouble at home

An American man has been arrested for allegedly trying to help the North Korean government evade U.S. economic sanctions by using blockchain technology. Virgil Griffith, 36, is accused of traveling to North Korea against the advice of U.S. officials to deliver a presentation on blockchain and cryptocurrency at the DPRK Cryptocurrency Conference in April. There, U.S. officials allege, Griffith interacted with attendees who apparently worked for the North Korean government. The North Koreans allegedly quizzed Griffith about the technical aspects of blockchain, the distributed ledger technology that creates a secure record of transactions and is the backbone of cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin. The American also allegedly discussed how cryptocurrencies could be used to launder money, a keen interest of the North Korean government.
