Malwarebytes updates lead to a weekend full of crashing computers

It was a rough weekend for California-based Malwarebytes after the anti-virus company had to push several updates to its Endpoint Security products in order to combat an issue that crashed machines due to high RAM usage. Soon after the company pushed an update to its Endpoint Security products, users flooded forums complaining that the product was using as much as 90 percent of their machine’s memory or CPU. The company pushed an update about an hour after the problems first surfaced, but that update caused users’ machines to crash upon a reboot. Please note that we are aware of the current update issues and the complete Malwarebytes team is all hands on deck to fix this ASAP. Thank you for your patience and understanding. https://t.co/TLtSG1TIQv — Malwarebytes (@Malwarebytes) January 27, 2018 A second update, pushed later Saturday, seemed to fix the issue. U.K. cyber agency tells government to handle Russian anti-virus software with caution

The United Kingdom’s national cyberthreat monitoring agency is advising some of the country’s agencies to quit using Russian anti-virus software. The warning is a change in tone from the National Cyber Security Centre’s longstanding position that the agency does not mandate or ban any products. NCSC head Ciaran Martin sent a public letter on Friday to the U.K.’s permanent secretaries about the “supply chain risk in cloud-based products.” Moscow-based cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab has been under particular scrutiny in the United States for supposedly enabling Russians to steal information from intelligence authorities through software backdoors. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security ordered in September that all federal agencies purge Kaspersky software from their networks. “The specific country we are highlighting in this package of guidance is Russia,” Ciaran writes. “The NCSC advises that Russia is a highly capable cyber threat actor which uses cyber as a tool of statecraft. This includes espionage, disruption and influence operations. Russia has the intent to […]

Bitdefender valued at $600M after private equity company buys significant minority stake

A European-based private equity company announced Friday it has taken a significant minority stake in Romanian cybersecurity company Bitdefender, valuing the company at more than $600 million. Vitruvian Partners, a London-based private equity firm, acquired approximately 30 percent of Bitdefender from existing shareholder Axxess Capital. Vitruvian becomes the second-largest shareholder with co-founders Mariuca and Florin Talpes continuing to hold the majority stake. The investment comes as the company has been growing, particularly in the United States. Bitdefender says more than 40 percent of sales are currently generated in the U.S., primarily from corporate customers. Bitdefender claims it has over 500 million users worldwide, putting in the ranks with other large anti-virus companies like Kaspersky Lab, McAfee and Symantec. “Vitruvian’s extensive experience investing in high growth technology companies endorses our strategy for international growth and in particular the significant investment we are making in building our Enterprise Solutions offering and our […]

Phishing Trojan Campaign Picks Up Pace, Morphing at Scale to Defeat Legacy Detection

Phishing attacks are nothing new, but we are noticing a new trend for polymorphism, both in the wrapping document and in the dropped executable. In samples that are literally minutes old, we see the control server is re-obfuscating and updating the malware faster than anti-virus programs are updating their awareness. The changes made are more […]
