Graham Cluley Security News is sponsored this week by the folks at VASCO. Thanks to the great team there for their support!

Last October, the European Parliament adopted the revised Directive on Payment Services (also known as PSD2), with the aim of harmonizing the European retail payments market, and fostering the adoption of innovative, easy-to-use and secure payment schemes.

PSD2 is part of a European initiative to better secure internet payments, combat “card not present” fraud and increase confidence in ecommerce and online banking.

Payment Service Providers (PSPs) must apply strong customer authentication under the directive – something many online banks are familiar with, but which may present a significant step for e-commerce services and may impact checkout processes.

In short, online merchants will need to find secure but also convenient authentication mechanisms.
