U.S. agrees to help Baltic states bolster grid cybersecurity

The United States on Sunday agreed to work more closely with three Baltic countries to protect their electric sectors from cyberattacks. “We see a crucial role that U.S. could play in assisting the Baltic states with strategic and technical support,” reads the declaration from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and officials from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, according to multiple news outlets. The four countries will establish a platform for sharing cybersecurity expertise over the next six months, the AFP reported. The agreement is a recognition of the need to fortify energy infrastructure that could be a prime target for hackers in the event of geopolitical conflict. Russia’s neighbors are very familiar with that dynamic: Kremlin-linked hackers cut power in parts of Ukraine in 2015 and 2016. Lithuania bans Kaspersky software, citing potential national security threats

Lithuania banned products from the Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab on Thursday, Reuters reports. The Baltic nation cited potential national security threats as the driving force behind the ban. Although the Moscow-based firm has faced a number of setbacks recently, this action marks the first time a country banned Kaspersky products across the public and private sectors. The Lithuanian ban follows an American federal government ban on Kaspersky that the company is now fighting in court. The U.S. ban resulted in only a small immediate drop in business, according to documents recently filed in court by Kaspersky. Charges of political hacking emerge as major German federal election approaches

It just wouldn’t be a modern day election without the possibility of cyberattacks and international conflict casting a shadow over the process. With the German federal election approaching on Sept. 24, a political ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel said her website was the subject of around 3,000 attempted cyber attacks in the run up to Sunday’s crucial televised debate. Julia Kloeckner, vice chairman of Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, did not explain the nature of the attacks but said “many of the senders have Russian IP addresses.” Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) confirmed to CyberScoop they are in contact with CDU over the alleged attacks but could not discuss specific details. The party did not respond to inquiries about the exact nature of the attacks.
